SALINITY

Salinity is the concentration of salts dissolved in water. The salinity level is the measure of the salt load a river carries in its water flow. Large amounts of salt have always entered the River Murray naturally via underground water flow, but unfortunately, since settlement we have increased the movement of salt into the river because of the ways we have been using the surrounding land (for example, over watering in irrigation and scrub clearance). So what was once a natural feature of the Murray River system, is now polluting it and causing a threat to this water supply.
